Just over a year ago, speed limits of 20/30/40 km/hour were introduced in Spain – depending on the classification of the road.

An assessment has now been made of the effect of the low speeds. It shows that the number of accidents has decreased. Fewer accidents and fewer deaths.

The Spanish traffic directorate DGT says that at a speed of just 50 km/h the risk of death in connection with an accident is 90 percent. If the speed is reduced to 30 km/h, the risk drops to only 10 percent. The braking distance is reduced by 40 percent.

DGT says that, in general, motorists are good at complying with speed limits.
