Maya Ruiz Picasso, daughter of the painter Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter, has died at the age of 87

Maya was the fruit of her father’s relationship with a model who became the painter’s other family at the same time that he was married to the Russian dancer Olga Klokova, the mother of Paulo Picasso.

Lawyer Richard Malka announced her passing, citing a statement from the family.

“Maya Ruiz-Picasso passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by her family, at the age of 87,” the statement said, without giving further details on the circumstances of her death. Born September 5, 1935, María de la Concepción, nicknamed Maya, was the first daughter of Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter, whom they met in 1927.

She dedicated a large part of her professional career to promoting the Picassian legacy. More than five years ago, the Government granted Ruiz Picasso Spanish nationality by naturalization letter, just three days before the presentation of the exhibition ‘Mercy and terror in Picasso: the road to Guernica’, which was held at the Reina museum Sofia to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the creation of this painting.

Pablo Picasso is considered to be one of the most famous painters of the twentieth century. He was born in Malaga, Spain on October 20, 1881. In addition to painting, Picasso was also a printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright. He spent most of his adult life in France.
