The Spanish authorities have announced that the country’s Ministry of Health has started to automatically update all the EU Digital COVID Certificates which are set to expire before June 30, 2023
According to the government of Spain, the Ministry will only update the certificates issued by the Ministry itself and it emphasised that the Ministry has already started to send electronic notifications with the updated form.
“The Ministry of Health has recently started the process of automatic updating of the EU Digital COVID Certificates (CCD-UE) that were issued at the time by the Ministry itself and which will expire before June 30, 2023,” the statement of the Spanish government reads.
The government explained that once the citizens whose certificates have been updated receive the notification, they can download the updated certificate with its new validity period.
In addition, the government stressed that anyone who wishes to renew their certificate can reapply for the document through the Ministry of Health website.
The government further explained that these certificates are being renewed in order to facilitate the free movement of people.
While Spain has decided to renew the validity of EU Digital COVID Certificates, the EU has already told its Member States to remove all COVID restrictions if they have any left.
Through an official statement issued on December 13, the Council of the European Union called on all Member States to lift the remaining COVID travel restrictions and enable freedom of movement within the bloc.
