A coastal railway line extension project linking Fuengirola to Algeciras has been proposed by the Junta de Andalucía

Next Generation funding could be used to extend the coastal railway from Fuengirola in Malaga to Algeciras in the province of Cádiz if a proposal from the Junta de Andalucía is approved.

Malaga and the municipalities at the eastern end of the region would be connected by expanding the Costa del Sol beach railway line, according to the Junta de Andalucía. With the help of this project, the train line that now terminates in Fuengirola would eventually travel past Marbella, Estepona, and on to Algeciras.

The Spanish Government requested a number of recommendations from the autonomous communities that would fit with the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, and those proposals led to the creation of this plan (PRTR). The Ministry of Economy responded by sending 241 initiatives that may be implemented in Andalucia.

The proposal does not only apply to the Cercanias network but also raises the possibility of adapting the line to high speed. This would greatly enhance the connection between the city of Marbella and Malaga Airport. This would create a real boost for tourism and logistics in the region.

Narrative
