The number of inhabitants in the town of Benalmadena on Spain’s Costa del Sol is fast approaching ‘large population’ status
Due to their failure to register on the padrón, about 7,500 foreign residents were still not included in the most recent National Institute of Statistics (INE) census numbers.
The most recent study’s findings confirmed the town’s second-highest growth rate over the previous ten years and reflect the state of the census (padrón) of Spanish municipalities. The municipality’s population increased from 70,204 in 2021 to 73,160 in 2022.
Recently, the population has been increasing at a more moderate rate of roughly 1,000 people per year. Prior to this, there had been a significant growth in population, from 65,965 to 69,002 people between 2012 and 2013.
The census rise, according to the town’s mayor, Victor Navas, “represents the biggest population growth in Benalmádena in recent decades and puts us on the cusp of meeting the objective of 75,000, which would allow us to become a Large Population Municipality.”
According to Sergio Torralvo, a councilor for general administration, the town hall is also working on a project that might help to produce a more accurate population estimate.
Because they had not registered or reregistered for the census, the councillor stated that 7,500 foreign residents were not included in the INE’s statistics. He claimed that two municipal representatives had been going to the homes of foreign residents who hadn’t updated their registration to remind them of their obligation to.
