Estepona man who tried to kill his ex-partner found hanged in jail

A 48-year-old man from Estepona who tried to kill his ex-partner in front of their daughters has been found hanged in his Alhaurin jail prison cell

In late December 2022, the deceased was arrested for stabbing his ex-partner in front of their daughters in Estepona. The attacker had just been released from prison and waited patiently for the 42-year-old victim on the landing of the building where she lived. As she left her home, he stabbed her several times in the back as their children watched on.

According to police, the intervention of the eldest daughter of the couple, 17 years old, helped save her life.

After the attack, he fled the scene. National Police officers managed to locate him however around 400 meters from the scene.

He was immediately arrested and taken to prison in the Alhaurín de la Torre detention centre. The charge of attempted murder was added to his previous charges of domestic abuse between June 2019 and August 2020.

The accused remained in prison until Tuesday, January 10, when he was found dead in his cell.

Officials found him hanging in his cell at around 8:30 am, after the daily prisoner count was taken. According to the initial hypotheses, the inmate took advantage of being alone and hanged himself using his shoelaces.

The victim required medical assistance and was transferred to the Malaga Regional Hospital. The emergency dept treated her for numerous injuries she sustained during the attack.

Although her recovery is going well, and her life is out of danger, she remains hospitalised and has not yet been able to give a statement to police of the events.
