Starting in spring 2024, the British low-cost airline EasyJet plans to establish a seasonal base at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport
By introducing three new Airbus A320 family planes, they will increase seat availability by 16% compared to this summer. This move marks EasyJet’s fourth base in Spain and is expected to raise the number of seats offered to 1.62 million next summers, up from the 1.4 million offered in the current season. The company will provide eleven routes to various European destinations from Alicante.
According to Javier Gándara, EasyJet’s General Director for southern Europe, this development will create approximately one hundred jobs and demonstrates the airline’s commitment to Spain’s growing market. Gándara emphasized Alicante’s appeal to customers and the potential for expanding operations in the country, considering the region’s increased route capacity in recent years. Establishing a base in Alicante allows EasyJet to enhance connectivity and bring the city closer to popular European destinations, strengthening its presence in the international air and tourism sectors.
Gándara also emphasized that this announcement reaffirms EasyJet’s commitment to Spain and the seasonal base model, which strengthens existing markets and creates new travel opportunities based on customer demand. Additionally, it contributes to local employment during a crucial season. Alicante will join Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and Malaga as strategic summer destinations with seasonal bases for the airline.
Since EasyJet began operating in Alicante in 1999, initially connecting the city with London Stansted, the airline has transported 27.5 million passengers to and from Alicante.
