The National Geographic Institute (IGN) of Spain has verified the occurrence of a magnitude 3.5 earthquake early on Tuesday, December 12. The quake’s epicentre was pinpointed in Jayena, situated in Andalucía’s Granada province.
As per the IGN’s information, the seismic event, recorded at 1.43 am, had a depth of 63 kilometres. Notably, there are no reports of the earthquake being felt in neighbouring municipalities.
Emergency coordination authorities at 112 Andalucía stated on their social media platforms that no calls related to the seismic activity have been received. Additionally, there is no indication of any personal or material damage resulting from the event.
What do do during an earthquake:
If you are indoors during an earthquake, the CDC recommends that you immediately DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON. Drop down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down.
This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary. Cover your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) underneath a sturdy table or desk.
If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won’t fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. Hold on to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around. If you are inside, stay inside.
Do not run outside or to other rooms during an earthquake. You are less likely to be injured if you stay where you are.
If you are outdoors, move to a clear area if you can safely do so; avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings, vehicles, and other hazards. If you are in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly and safely as possible and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped, avoiding roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake .
