The sale of electric vehicles sales surged by 70% across Spain across the whole sector but questions remain about charging points
Sales of electrified vehicles in Spain, including electric and plug-in hybrid cars, commercial and industrial vehicles, buses, and quadricycles, recorded an impressive increase of 70.4% in March, reaching a total of 11,690 units sold.
Although the figure is an improvement from last year’s results, the sales volume still only accounts for 10% of the total market. This is below the European average, despite the overall market’s robust growth of nearly 115,000 units.
Zero and Low Emission Vehicles
Registrations of zero and low-emission vehicles, which include electric, hybrid, and gas vehicles, increased by 73.1% in March, with 42,815 units sold.
Electric Vehicles – Zero Label
Sales of pure electric vehicles increased by 63.1% in March, with 5,684 units registered, representing 4.83% of the market share for the month. Sales of these vehicles in the year-to-date period totalled 13,878 units, a 62.7% increase from the previous year. The cumulative market share for the year is 4.95%.
Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles – Zero Label
Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles surged by 78% in March, reaching 6,006 registered units. This figure represents 5.17% of the market share for the month. Sales of these vehicles in the year-to-date period reached 14,953 units, a 41.5% increase from the previous year. The cumulative market share for the year is 5.33%.
Hybrid Vehicles – ECO Label
Sales of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 74.3% in March, with 29,199 units registered, representing 25.11% of the market share for the month. In the year-to-date period, sales of these vehicles accumulated 73,143 units, a 53.8% increase from the previous year. The cumulative market share for the year is 26.08%.
Gas Vehicles – ECO Label
Sales of gas vehicles grew by 71.8% in March, with 1,919 registered units, representing 1.65% of the market share for the month. Sales of these vehicles in the year-to-date period reached 5,803 units, a 70.7% increase from the previous year. The cumulative market share for the year is 2.07%.
Hydrogen Vehicles – Zero Label
Sales of hydrogen cell vehicles registered seven new registrations in March, accumulating a total of eight units sold in 2023.
Conclusion
Despite the continued increase in electrified passenger car sales, both the volume and the rate of sales are still below the necessary objectives. To meet emissions reduction commitments, the electrified market must reach 190,000 units sold this year. However, if the current rate is maintained, the national market will only slightly surpass 100,000 registrations.
